Moms Helping Moms

Everyone should do what they can to help make the world a better place -- even when it feels like you can't do one more thing!

We support a variety of organizations, but Baby Buggy, Mapendo International and WHEDCO are three organizations that are dear to us and our families.

Baby Buggy
Baby Buggy is dedicated to helping New York's neediest families by providing essential equipment, clothing and products. Starting in 2008 we are donating a portion of the proceeds from every Penelope Peapod sold to help them continue this important work in our home town. Find out more here.

Mapendo International
Mapendo International identifies, protects and cares for people in Africa fleeing war and violence, whose lives are in imminent danger and who fall outside existing aid efforts. Read Lorna's blog from her trip to Africa working with urban refugees.

WHEDCO
The Women's Housing and Economic Development Corporation (WHEDCO) is in the Bronx, just north of Manhattan. WHEDCO is working to end poverty by providing people with the tools and support they need to enter and succeed in the economic mainstream. Shelagh visited WHEDCO recently and was so impressed with what she saw happening. The organization's work is a local model for national and global equality. Contained in a couple buildings within one city block in the South Bronx, they provide and/or operate among other things:

• 130 apartments for women and their children (primarily coming out of homeless shelters)
• An elementary/middle school with an award winning after-school program helping children test into excellent public schools
• Head start program for 3- 5 year-olds with literacy classes for their parents.
• A public advocacy center where people in the community can walk in off the street and see a legal aid lawyer.
• A family day care micro-enterprise which provides training in the business of childcare.
• Urban Horizons Kitchen which helps incubating businesses.

At a time when the gap between rich and poor is greater than ever, WHEDCO narrows the divide.
